DFG 3D-Viewer Practical Guidelines on Metadata for 3D Cultural Heritage: Core Recommendations for Aggregation and Interoperability
Show workshop descriptionThe growing publication and reuse of 3D cultural heritage data creates an increasing need for practical and interoperable metadata recommendations. Within the DFG 3D-Viewer project, we are developing guidelines intended to support the description and aggregation of 3D cultural heritage resources across repositories, research infrastructures and web-based environments.
The workshop will first briefly position these recommendations within the wider landscape of standards, infrastructures, projects and tools relevant to the lifecycle of 3D cultural heritage data. This overview will provide a practical orientation for identifying where existing resources can support the creation, documentation, publication, aggregation and reuse of 3D data.
The main part of the session will focus on the emerging DFG 3D-Viewer Practical Guidelines. We will present the proposed core metadata recommendations for aggregation, discuss how this core can be extended for different research and cultural heritage contexts, and examine how interoperability with existing metadata standards, infrastructures and web technologies can be achieved without reproducing complete object-level documentation models.
Participants will also receive a preview of the developing recommendation guidebook. A short survey and moderated discussion will be used to evaluate the proposed scope, identify missing requirements and use cases, and establish priorities for the next stage of the recommendations. The workshop is therefore intended not only to present the current work, but also to involve the community directly in shaping practical metadata guidance for the aggregation and interoperable publication of 3D cultural heritage.

Virtually There: Building Sustainable Digital Heritage and Developing Virtual Worlds with IIIF 3D
Show workshop descriptionWith the growing importance of IIIF for the world's most sharable and sustainable digital collections, 3D data is a key addition to the ability to preserve our past and present a future with greater depths and dimensions of suitable narratives and factual fidelity. The great developments and applications of 3D media are explored in the 3D Community Group (CG) and 3D Technical Specification Group (TSG), and some key examples will be shared in the workshop.
The newly launched IIIF Presentation API 4.0 includes the standards for interoperable 3D content, expanding the potential for all IIIF-based collections. In this session we show you how to try some of the new capabilities, to engage with and help further the refinement of examples from multiple 3D collections.
The Presentation API 4.0 also has options for incorporation of 2D and A/V with 3D data, including for digital dioramas, scene construction considerations, and for more inclusive and sustainable virtual worlds. This session will provide an overview with use cases, some available demos and take-home examples, and guidelines on the accessible use of AI and other tools for combining and creating files, based on the technical specifications for IIIF 3D, to demonstrate the vast possibilities of using Presentation API 4.0. Virtual 3D reconstructions of transformed, lost, or never-built architecture and archaeological contexts are increasingly used as research tools and as forms of knowledge production. However, despite the consolidated principles established by the London Charter and subsequent initiatives such as the Seville Principles, shared criteria for assessing their scientific quality, transparency, and sustainability are still lacking. The use of documentary sources, assumptions, interpretative choices, and degrees of uncertainty is often insufficiently documented, limiting the ability to verify, compare, update, and reuse the results of hypothetical reconstructions.
The workshop What Makes 3D Virtual Reconstructions Scientific? Towards a New Charter for the Documentation of Hypothetical 3D Virtual Reconstructions in Architecture and Archaeology will explore the need for a new shared framework defining good scientific practice in this field. Particular attention will be given to the documentation of research and decision-making processes, metadata and paradata, the representation and communication of uncertainty, interoperability, and alignment with the FAIR principles.
Rather than presenting a predefined solution, the workshop is conceived as an interactive and exploratory session, bringing together different perspectives on what should constitute transparent, verifiable, and reusable scholarly 3D reconstruction. It will provide an opportunity to discuss emerging ideas, identify shared priorities, and critically reflect on the requirements that such a framework should address.
The discussion initiated in Mainz will contribute to a broader collaborative process towards a New Charter, which will continue at CHNT 31 in Vienna in November 2026 and through subsequent exchanges with the international research community.
